The museum exhibition SONIC YOUTH ETC. : SENSATIONAL FIX focuses on the multidisciplinary activities of Sonic Youth since the band’s formation in 1981. It features the band’s collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians, as well as a choice of other works selected by the band. Through the multidisciplinary output of Sonic Youth and related works by other artists in the exhibition, an alternative history of contemporary culture is being uncovered in which the division between ‘high art’ and ‘low art’ is being called into question, while issues are explored such as teenage rebellion, adolescent wanderlust, gender, fame, fashion, sexuality, and religion. The exhibition is initiated and curated by freelance curator Roland Groenenboom in collaboration with the band and will be presented in Bolzano, Italy (from 10 October 2008 to 4 January 2009), and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany (31 January to 26 April 2009). Next up are The Museum of Malmö, Sweden (from May 29 to September 20 2009) and Centro Huarte de Arte Contemporaneo, Navarra/Nafarroa, Spain (October 2009 to January 2010). Further venues are currently in discussion, in Europe, the US and Asia. A complete description of the show can be found here.

Hey, some label really know how to treat their fans, Matador for example. I just joined the „Buy Early Get Now“ offer that includes the stream of the album, extras like downloads, pre-sales for concert tickets etc. and i am waiting peacefully for the mailman to ring and give me The Eternal and an LP live in NYC last summer.
I love the concept, not because it’s a concept, but because it really shows that (some) labels care about their audience in the name of the artist. For those who are interested, here the magic formula for the music industry:
CwF+RtB=$$$$
Thanks Matador, Thanks SY, now let’s stream, download and listen legally.

Was ist denn aus meinem beliebten Kollektiv Jazzanova geworden? Was hat nun Universal da getan? Was ist das für eine völlig gefühlslose voll mit zielgruppenlosen Werbemitteln geladenen Webseite, die da gebaut wurde?? Ich bin so enttäuscht. Riecht nach Major und Geld. Schade. Höre mir lieber die alten Sachen an. Hoffentlich kommt Jazzanova zu seinen Roots zurück. Tschüss Universal.

Good news: JUNE 9: THE ETERNAL
Sonic Youth’s 16th album, ‘The Eternal’, will be released on vinyl, compact disc, and digital album by Matador Records on June 9. Produced by John Agnello and the band, ‘The Eternal’ not only marks Sonic Youth’s return to the independent label sphere (titles on their own SYR label excepted) after a long association with Geffen, but more importantly, ranks as one of their more inspired efforts in a 28 year career.
Recorded through November and December of last year at the band’s Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, ‘The Eternal’ features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth’s touring band for the past few years. They will be touring throughout the summer in support of the new album.
Of ‘The Eternal’, Matador’s Gerard Cosloy says, „We’ve not had a record in our recent history that’s been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation. Suffice to say we’re pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs.“
Matador will shortly announce a Buy Early Get Now opportunity for the album with some very interesting bonus material.

It was expected: Spotify is „going to be removing a number of songs from their catalogue and adding country restrictions to some tracks, which may make them unplayable for us“, Spotify users around the globe. I already see my playlist melting like snow….
Congrats Warner, SonyBMG, EMI and all the other majors. You won the battle but you won’t win the war.
UPDATE: seems like there are some good news as well. CD Baby will distribute about 1 million songs through Spotify.
